About
I’m a writer, artist and literary curator, living in L.A.
I’m the author of The Crooked Mirror: A Memoir of Polish-Jewish Reconciliation and two previous books, THE SOUVENIR: A DAUGHTER DISCOVERS HER FATHER’S WAR and The Knowing Body: The Artist as Storyteller in Contemporary Performance.
A History for the Future: The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles 1980-2000, published 2023 (Sam Francis Foundation, limited edition).
I was the founder and for twenty-five years the curator of the ALOUD lecture, reading and performance series at Los Angeles Public Library , where people from all over the city came together to agree and disagree and listen and sometimes even sing.
I co-direct the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities at USC. I have been a guest literary curator and consultant (and often interviewer) for PEN World Voices Festival ; The Broad Museum (“Allegories of Flight,” Shirin Neshat exhibit; Jasper Johns, “Something Resembling Truth”); Skirball Cultural Center, and other venues.
I’ve had the pleasure of being a resident artist at Ucross Foundation; Robert Rauschenberg Foundation; Blue Mountain Center; Mesa Refuge; Centrum Foundation; and Warsaw Bauhaus.
